Church Terms: Hallelujah
We passionately rebrand the name of Jesus Christ to generation Y, X.
We couldn’t help but notice some of the ongoing church vernacular. THIS STUFF CAN DRIVE A NORMAL HUMAN CRAAAAZY!!!
Most would categorize words such as, Hallelujah, Praise The Lord and Glory to God to “in their words” MAGNIFY His name. We are completely in compliance with glorifying the name of Jesus Christ, we are all for ensuring He is well represented and communicated accurately. We are Jesus Branders on the internet… that is what we do… Public Relations for Jesus. But…. most of the time when I hear these words/phrases in a church community, they are FILLERS.
Fillers – this can be defined as wasted space or that moment when a Christian is at a loss for words, a communication breakdown and they reach for the all encompassing…. HALLELUJAH. Really? {long drawn our reaaaaaaaaaallly?} What is interesting is the recent poll we administered (UNOFFICIAL) of church terms such as HALLELUJAH.
We found only 1 person to come remotely close to the official definition of the word HALLELUJAH. 1 – TOTAL – PERSON in a large church community. If you are on the edge of your chair or have googled what HALLELUJAH means already, you will find it is a HEBREW word meaning “praise Yahweh”.
OK, notice the word is Hebrew. Now we are not space cadets but last time we checked church statistics for evangelical/charasmatic, we only found stories upon stories asking “will evangelicals and Jews get along?” I know, I know… your going to say “but the Bible, and Jews and Jesus and all of those historical arguments”. Good questions and yes, history is important… the Hebrew language is important… Jews are the chosen race of Israel…
DOES THAT MEAN WE THROW AROUND A HEBREW WORD TO A NON-JEWISH CHURCH COMMUNITY WHEN WE CANNOT EVEN DEFINE IT?
We are asking for those who exercise Christianese {language based on loose historical christian language, thank you Urban Dictionary} to understand your target audience. Please take time to clearly define words you speak. Remember, if you are engaging an audience which is 90% spanish…. you better know spanish or have a translator. If you are embracing Jewish customs and culture to GENTILES, it is best to define CHURCH TERMS to your church community.

Thank you for reminding us that we will be “judged for every idle word” that we speak. (Matt. 12:36)

But it all sounds soooo hooooly! Especially when the tone of voice changes…or becomes a holy whisper…Time to prove our love, for our God, by actions, and cut the phony gibberish, because no one is buyin’ it!
