church culture, communication

The last week or so has been adjusted communication as my senses put on the emergency brake a few extra times causing complete shift. One moment my life seemed to be driving on cruise control … very steady … normal … routine. Internal life brakes were applied resulting in actions outside the normal life routine. I was forced to address my culture and actively communicate with unfamiliar situations … stop :: look :: listen

Our team finished editing some footage for a church service and exited the vacant, dark, eery parking lot. As I was turning left to head home, I couldn’t help but notice a caravan and a small automobile parked at the very far end corner of the church parking lot. I stopped my vehicle, flashed my lights a few times …. then thought to myself … “what the heck is flashing my lights going to do?” and more importantly “am I prepared to handle this situation by myself?” After answering both questions out loud in my vehicle …. I turned up my radio and went home as it was near midnight and Sunday morning was approaching faster than I anticipated.

I say hello and introduce myself to Zach, Jesse and Anthony who look straight out of a youth hostel or one of those new crafty Dolce & Gabbana ads… I can never tell anymore if models are really models or poor, white kids who have no idea what they are doing… they meet an Art Director and he says “don’t look at the camera and think about where you are right now”… and that my friends… is the mugshot of a model. {back on track}

Come to find out these young guys have driven from Toronto and are passing through enroute to Cornerstone Music Festival in Western Illinois. We shook hands and in – that – moment… I knew we needed to be sure they were looked after. We made a day of it… they hung at our house, grilled, ate, went swimming and enjoyed the company of complete strangers. We actively listened to their stories, tried to understand what traveling in a caravan is like and most importantly the simplistic Love of Christ.

Christ was the common ingredient … the bond forging strangers together… It was one of the most beautiful scenes I had seen in quite some time. The joys of youth, the stories created when traveling across country with little or no money and excitement exploding in their pupils… In a small town in Illinois, we exchanged canvases of communication… a cosmo of culture was intertwined …. and it was EVERYTHING that it is cracked up to be.
