After being in London for 4 days, I have generated some amazing moments to share with you. These topics range vastly from listening to life changing, Biblical teachings by, Dr. Robb Thompson or T.D. Jakes, to a conversation I had with a San Francisco real estate developer concerning The Parable of the Talents. I also had time to catch up with my close friend, Richard Mannah. Richard is on track to win this year’s award for London’s best hairstylist, and he has partnered with Hillsong London to create unique strategic gatherings. London is an incredible epicenter for great moments. Every time I spend time in London, creativity whirls its wand around me. The style, the fashion, the pace, the tube (or pronounced chube), the tea, the Queen and so much history.
Inasmuch as I could give you a traveler’s perspective or some great story about me and what I think is incredible, I feel the need to pick up a shovel and do some digging with you. You may ask, “what are we digging up?” Simply put, I want to dig into the heart, which some may call, the soul. It is the sum of what you do and why you do it.
Proverbs 4:23 – Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.
The course of your life is a pretty big deal. In fact, most will agree it is the single most important understanding. Those who find it, succeed in life, those who do not drift along as wind in the desert. So here is a great quote from the book of Proverbs concerning the heart and the importance of its protection. What I find most interesting about quotations is how many people love quotes. They love quoting John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King Jr., Franklin Covey, Winston Churchill and even Jesus. What people love the most about quotes is also what they hate the most. The – Doing – Part. Living out something just seems impossible. Maybe in movies, the Bible or Twilight novels… but in my life?
Ecclesiastes 1:9 – History merely repeats itself. It has all been done before. Nothing under the sun is truly new.
I found this passage extremely interesting, as I was recently reading a book called, “Letters From A Stoic – Seneca.” This book highlights the ancient philosopher Seneca, and many letters he wrote to many different people. You could call it a diary or published emails from him to many other students, philosophers and friends. What I found to be interesting was in direct relation to this passage of scripture in Ecclesiastes, and also spoken by Rick Warren.
Seneca is quoted as saying finding life’s purpose is of great value. Seneca wrote letters between 20 a.d. – 65 a.d. to friends concerning The Purpose Driven Life. Nothing new under the sun on this topic, Mr. Rick Warren. It is interesting how cultures have shaped us to believe today’s voices, when most of what is communicated today is as Solomon said, “…nothing new under the sun.”
What is relevant to you may be your career, your friends and family or acquiring heaps of wealth. While all of these facets of life are enormously important, they are still only the fruits of something else. This something else ultimately correlates to the condition of your heart.
Humans invest over 4 billion dollars each year in enhancing their appearance in forms of fitness, nutrition and surgery. We are masters at dieting, new workout regiments and perfecting our skin daily. We build organic grocers in areas which were once ghettos, and construct parks where once was a lake or ocean. Our bodies are temples to all of us and to some of us, they are our most important temple.
I am the first one to jump aboard the health and nutrition wagon. I love it. I feel great eating healthy and implement the proper fitness schedule. What is being addressed is the condition of your soul. How does our soul-spending compare to our physical body spending? How have we invested our time into building our soul infrastructure? Remember, nothing new under the sun.
This is usually the spot where you hear the pitch of the message. This is when you expect the writer to toss in the, “Okay, let’s pray this prayer for you to get your soul in order.” Well that is not completely what I am after. First and foremost, you have to see a need in your own soul. If there is no need in your soul, then go in peace and enjoy a grande soy latte, extra shot with honey (my new favorite drink at starbucks). Twisting someone’s guilty buttons only works momentarily because they soon go home to their world and remember what it feels like without guilt.
Admit One. If you have ever looked at a ticket stub chances are it says these words, Admit One. When it comes to what is happening in our soul, a person has to grab one of these tickets. This is step one toward gaining access to proper soul management. If you are saying, “ya, that’s me, I admit,” then lets walk briskly toward the next goal.
It will be impossible to change without changing the environment you are in. Just look at the millions of people around the world who claim they are Christians. If all these people were Christians than why do they get their asses kicked around by the devil? If all these people are Christians then why are they struggling in their marriage, on their job, in their home and why are they unhappy?
Lets me be blunt. You don’t put crack in front of an addict who just finished rehab (unless you’re a celebrity… joking). We mirror the same notion when we attempt to energize our soul with Jesus only to go home and have all the energy sucked away in our neighborhood and with friends. If you’re serious about soul management with Christ, be ready to make some moves.
Christ will change and transform your life, period. He is not a genie, a lottery ticket, or a magic show. He wants you, and whether you believe this or not, He needs you. He has a mission on this Earth and has your name on it. The question is simply up to you: do you want it, or not? These are words you need to hold onto because these were the words which shattered my soul.
Jesus Christ Needs You.
