Asia’s Most Hated Church Couple

What do people do who are talented, sexy, charming, charismatic and influential? Wait, let me re phrase that question a bit. What happens when a follower of Christ is talented, sexy, charming, charismatic and influential?

As they hang in mid air from a David Blaine_esque glass box for all to see, what are we supposed to do? Stare, point, curse, throw em the finger, encourage, cheer, toast, dance, question, assault, jury, warn, mimic, prosecute, take pictures, make movies …

From time to time I like to check in on Asia’s most hated church couple. None other than Pastor Kong Hee and Sun Ho. Many of you may be aware that Pastor Kong Hee is the senior pastor of City Harvest Church where more than 20,000 people gather every weekend to celebrate Christ. His wife, Sun Ho also known to many as Sun (the one who acts, dresses, dances like a) Ho, is an Asian pop star. A legit Asian pop star. Not a Bai Ling, show up at every celebrity party because you had a 5 second scene in one of the 10 Star Wars films. Sun Ho is legit, a Billboard music #1 club hit pop star.

So, like any curious writer, I search and search to discover who is stalking this couple. What they are saying, what they are not saying and who is taking shots at them. Just from a physical appearance standpoint many chuck stones on em. Pastor Kong Hee with his cool, calm, eloquent manner of speaking leading more than 20,000 people every weekend. Your going to hate this statistic but I just looked up the average population of cities in the USA. The answer, 6,545.

There is a shot in the mouth! His church is nearly 3x times the average population density of cities in the United States! So, Pastor Kong is not only a cool looking Asian cat but is leading a church 3x times the average city population size in the United States, authored a grip of books, owns multiple houses and his wife is an Asian pop star. CAN – YOU – DEAL – WITH – THAT!!

This is when you grab your drink, twist off the top, grab your glass, drop some rocks and sip your hater_ade like thousands around the world. It is the one of the easiest thing to do. Why is it so easy to hate? Why is it so easy to explode our opinion concerning others actions/appearance/lifestyle?

How could a pastor have a wife who is a pop star? How could pastor Kong Hee have more than 1 place to live … isn’t that extravagance? Isn’t that sinful? Isn’t that … Isn’t that … Isn’t that … Isn’t that …

I guess we go back to the opening statement of: what happens when a follower of Christ is talented, sexy, charming, charismatic and influential? What if Christ is making their way prosperous and granting them success? What if?

Can judgement, mercy and encouragement play together?

This congregation has erected a magnificent Church glorifying God not themselves and is a place of worship.
Just as we need Las Vegas and Casino’s to worship other things.

The Pastors maybe disliked even hated by hundreds even thousands of non-believers but they are loved by millions.

What if Christ has nothing to do with making their way prosperous and granting them success? What if Satan has nothing to do with it, either?
Perhaps the church is successful because of something God is doing, but her pop career has nothing to do with God. When Christians have careers, businesses, or churches that fail, is that necessarily God’s fault?
Lastly, why am I finding myself spending time posting at a Christian website? lol!

sinned34: your thoughts are appreciated and thanks for stopping by a “christian” site… random, i guess not random from you because you probably do have a genuine hate for church… so it would make sense. stop by more often, your thoughts are good provoking conversation pieces. cheers.

So long as I’m welcome here, I don’t mind dropping by to offer a different point of view.
As for a “hate for church”, I don’t hate church. There used to be some things I enjoyed about church when I was younger, and that I’d probably still enjoy if I started going to church again. However, church really has nothing to offer me anymore, so it’d really just be a waste of everyone’s time if I tried attending. I still bust out some of my old Christian heavy metal albums sometimes, and recently posted on Facebook that Tourniquet’s “Pathogenic Ocular Dissonance” was one of the best progressive metal albums of the 90′s.

sinned34: what things did you enjoy about church, can you expound? what is something you would be interested in if a church offered? cheers.

Holaratcha: When I went to church, I enjoyed the camaraderie and the multiple, if somewhat shallow, friendships that most church groups experience. I also liked the sense of purpose and importance that being a member of the church gave. Generally, when you walk into a church as a Christian, you know that there is one thing you share with the majority of the other people at that church: your love of God.
As for what might interest me if a church offered it, there really isn’t anything anymore. When I was a Christian, I was an unsure young man with low self-esteem and very few friends. Since I left the church, I’ve grown up, became confident in myself, I have made a number of good friends, I have learned how to deal with the difficulties of life on my own, and I’ve built my own purpose in life. Couple that with the fact that I no longer believe in or have need for God, and church life has become obsolete and irrelevant to me.

Holaratcha: Anytime. It’s always good to have a healthy dialogue between believers and non-believers!

This is not supposed to be of a christian leader. Christ is definitely not represented here. Its a disgrace!

why is it i’m the non-believer and yet im the one driving a ferrari and living in a landed property?
praying is certainly for people (failures in life) to seek comfort. btw, i reckon opening a few more city harvests around the world would be a brilliant business plan!
