Which is Better: Numbers or Unity?

“1….2….3… let’s go church. Let’s get out there today and make our church the best
hottest, biggest, church. Let us be the “A-list” of Christian churches today!”

Does this sound like the pre-game warm-up for the majority of churches in today’s
world?

I had the opportunity to head down a few weeks ago to good ole’ Springfield, IL to
bring the word to a worship night that was planned by one of the local churches in
the area. It was ready to go.  It was an opportunity for the local church to unite local teens with the gospel.

Is that not what the church is suppose to be about? Saving the lost and caring for
those within and outside of the body?

I had the chance to chat with the pastor who was hosting the event. We went
over the night and how the service was going to go, and then I asked him what he
thought would be the number of students showing up. (Stupid human me asking
that because it’s all about the numbers… right?)

He answered with a bit of frustration in his voice. He said, “You know I invited
almost 10 of the local churches in the area and only 2 gave me a response back! I am
hoping for every one that needs to be there to be there. It is just frustrating to me
that they do not want to get involved in an event that could bring a soul to Jesus

The Lord hit me in the head at that very moment. It wasn’t one of those simple
smacks; it was one when the red mark is still on your cheek 5 minutes afterwards.

I sat back at that very moment almost dumfounded and wondered when and why
the body of Christ has become so competitive. When has the body of Christ become
a church that brags about their numbers, tells about their amazing buildings, pushes
their services to be limits so people will leave in amazement, and FORGET that we
are the body of Christ and people’s souls are depending on us.

Romans 12:5. “So we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually
members one of another.”

When did the church of America become so disconnected
with the gospel of Jesus Christ that we do not scream and shout when a church
shares of the lost being found? When are we going to put our own mission
statements behind us and begin to support one another, and believe that God wants
to restore of the church of America. He is about his body and about the lost being
found through his grace and mercy.

I sat at my desk and wondered how many teens would miss the chance to hear
about Jesus that night.
Stop the nonsense. Stop the competition. Jesus aint in that business. He is in the
business of saving souls and we as the body need to recognize that and begin to
stand together and believe for a revival to ignite.

You can follow my daily chatter @JPTroglio, would love to hear your thoughts.

Great words here for the church of Jesus Christ. We’re not for our own churches alone but for the Kingdom!

I like this because it speaks to me personally. What’s sad is that churches are not cooperating with one another as they should, as far as I can see. We act all skeptical when someone hosts an event instead of helping that event, right, JP? It’s crazy! We are not separate churches; we are the one Body of Christ! I had the opportunity to visit World Changers International in Atlanta where Pastor Creflo Dollar teaches, coming from Dr. Robb Thompson’s church, Family Harvest Church, Tinley Park, Illinois. This phenomena that you have explained struck me then. Thanks, man.

    A few questions:

How long before the church in America is completely irrelevant?

I mean just look at the marquee in front of many of our churches…..from ‘pet blessing sundays’ and ’40 days to a new you’ to ‘the gospel according to Papa Smurf,’ the church has lost the ability to reach the lost because we are afraid we might offend them.

How long before our multi-million dollar church campuses are empty, bankrupt shells withering away on their 50 acre lots?

Can we continue to spend millions upon millions on our churchs (and homes and cars and stuff for that matter) and still be able to preach about sin and the dire consequences it brings? Can we spend that money on ourselves, wear the label “Christian” and know that the poor are right outside the gate?

Finally….When is the church really going to learn how to worship? (not that I really have it figured out, myself)

We rush in, ten minutes late, socializing all the way to ‘our seat.’ We go through the motions, never hearing from God or asking His Spirit to dwell within us (or the building for that matter). We hear a ‘message’ that passes us by and we leave, checking another thing off our list.

Sorry to rant, maybe it’s the heat….maybe not. Maybe something’s wrong.
