I probably should have some sort of about me page on this website but I don’t. I should have a really nice logistical page clarifying what my hate for church really is, but I don’t. I should layout a 10 point post stating why I love the church and why I use the word hate in its place, but I don’t. Look people! I know I should, I don’t but maybe you will actually read some of these posts and figure it all out?

This past weekend some friend and I embarked on a local project which has been a dream of mine for a bit of time. We grouped up, picked up a few cases of bottled water, ice and coolers and distributed to bar hoppers in our town (Tinley Park, IL.)

We have been discussing Servolution in our community. If you do not know what Servolution is, check out the side link bar on the right hand side of this screen. Great book by Dino Rizzo who kills it in Baton Rouge, LA.

If you ever stumbled out of a bar you can appreciate a friendly face with a FREE bottle of water. If you are about to hack all over the place or have already spewed your guts in a trash can, then you know. Get Home Safe! Drive safe! Have a great night! These are words of life.

My boy John Ramirez who is an absolute wizard at the age of 17 was out there with us and put together this little diddy. He is for hire if you need some ninja skills.

I can’t say I have polled an official amount of people concerning this ideology of people who Fear Church. What I can say is there are a whole slew of men and women around the world who are absolutely petrified to let their clean, crisp converse enter the doors of a church. Many won’t admit it up front but if you sit down with them for a bit of time you will be able to complete an inception extraction. Hate, fear and prejudices pour out of em like an episode of Jerry Springer meets Cops meets Celebrity Rehab.

Molestation, judgement and fearful moments at church are enough for these folks to see M. Night Shyamalan “dead people” any time they see a crucifix. Church stories include men and women locked in rooms and told they cannot leave until the Holy Spirit touches them or a demon departs. Is this church or Guantanamo Bay some may ask?

Since it is America and I am American, this sort of epidemic should be labeled. We label every kind of disorder and so why not add another to the mix. If you are one of the one’s or know someone who is petrified of their shadow touching a church, then they suffer from Ecclesiophobia – The Fear of Churches.

Let’s just say someone has tendencies toward this label of ecclesiophobia, what do you do? Can the church or your church begin to implement procedures to cut back on this growing movement of ecclesiophobia? Or, do we just pass them by and say those people really do Hate Church and are unreachable?

As I was digging for some other findings of the Fear of Churches I stumbled upon this guys blog in which he deals with this topic of ecclesiophobia. This guy George Saylor gets what is happening and has some King Kong balls for battling this fear. Huge kudos to him and his work in Canada.

I would love to say there is official statistics out there concerning ecclesiophobia but there just is not. It appears if you have a Fear of Church you just simply never step foot in a church or avoid it at all cost. This is an obvious battle with all churches today. Catholics are continually under fire for molestation, Pentecostals accused and on YouTube attempting to cast out homosexual demons, Evangelicals and Independents just wanting your money, Baptists screaming at abortion clinics and so on.

When an individual is diagnosed with a phobia there is an extensive treatment process. The three basic procedures are flooding, counter-conditioning and systematic desensitization. You can read about those here.

The most important part in all of this is someone has to walk through the phobia treatment with them. Hand in hand, side to side, step for step, terror by terror, until they can confidently stand tall by themselves. It is a battle, a process and requires patience and probably some long suffering.

Have you thought about it like that before?

A few quotes have jumped around in my brain like a crackhead in a rubber room. I have heard worthless words of religion constructed and displaced into everything around us. They continually explode in my brain and echo more reasons why Christianity is mediocre. Christianity is replicating mediocrity and indecisiveness. Maybe a better phrase is, Christianity is gettin Ho’d out!

Ho’d out in the sense that Christians only take the parts of the Bible they like and quickly move on. Ho’d out in the sense a young man or woman hangs out with another man or woman who they “just like to have fun with.” You know the Sex and the City mandate; “friends with all the benefits”. You get all the fun with minimal responsibilities. You have tons of friends with zero depth. You have a belief in the Bible because you think it gets you into heaven, but don’t know what it says. Am I getting warm yet?

This morning I read the entire chapter of Psalm 119. It – is – a – beast! But worth getting your mind, will and emotions entrenched every bit of its meaning. This particular Psalm is masterful and full of everything about everything, it even includes the word hate.

Before I record which verse it was, I think it would be a good idea to reintroduce yourself to something you hate. You may hate flying American or United airlines. You may hate red light cameras which are instinctively set on timers to collect more funds from you. Maybe you hate humidity or people who hate humidity. I have heard of plenty of people who hate traffic, politics, churches, preachers, priests, old people, young people, white people, black people, asian drivers, healthcare, school, voting, war, yellow school buses, welfare, drug dealers, communism or barney the purple dinosaur.

I would love to hear your thoughts concerning your response to people who ask you about church or God? What do you say to them? I would like to include a quote from President Obama initiating some of this thinking. How does church, God or the Bible affect your decision making?

This includes you who do not attend church or God as well. What do you say when someone asks you about your faith? How do you respond to others concerning Islam, Agnostic viewpoints, Buddhism or Hinduism. Thank you in advance for taking the time to read and record your thoughts and beliefs.

UPDATE: Obama spokesperson responds to survey: “President Obama is a committed Christian, and his faith is an important part of his daily life. . . The President’s strong Christian faith is what guides him through these challenges but he doesn’t wear it on his sleeve.”

NOTE: This is not a site designed to be a battle ground. We have enough wars in the world and enough places where you can fight with someone. I ask for you to be civil with each other and treat another as if they are “created in the image and likeness of God”. Thank you and God bless.

Can’t say I would ever imagine one of my favorite men’s magazines picking up a story concerning church. I was nervous at first to open up the front cover. I obviously looked around to see if anyone was watching. I mean, it is Zac Efron on the cover. He is not exactly one of those guys you look at and say, “Ya, Zac seems like a fly dude.” You don’t just pick up the magazine when someone that – good – looking is on it as a male reader. Rule #1 to being a closet homosexual. Buying and reading anything containing Zac Efron.

Zac will catch more flack because he is better looking than 99.987% of the people on this planet. Hence, he will fall into the “you may be gay for looking at him” category. Sorry Zac, you’re a cool cat but you know how it is. Fortunately, you’re so good looking and still young that your fan base may stick with you for another 4 years. Until they release a new, hotter version of Zac. The new Zac will be all the goodness of Zac except Hollywood will add a regenerated chromosome. This new chromosome will contain enough badboy in him to outshine the original Zac. This will in turn create a “War upon Zac Efron”. Good Zac vs Bad Zac.

Right up front I have to applause Anna David for writing such a great piece concerning “The New Faces of Faith”. Anna is a brilliant writer and beautiful which now makes sense why she hit up Reality LA church. We all know beautiful people beget beautiful people. Does that theory count as the “Law of Attraction?” Not quite sure but Anna delivered a hit concerning beautiful people, the church and its driving force in Los Angeles.

What I love about this story is the idea that this type of Christian Faith is front page worthy. Everything Reality LA church is doing is making an impact in a unique way with tastemaker media. Tim Chaddick has been busting his tail for over 4 years in Los Angeles building a boutique style church. A church that speaks the language of this unique culture. A church communicating the black and white message of the gospel in Los Angeles. A church that has hundreds of what we would call “beautiful people” sitting in chairs listening to a pastor. A church attracting the attention of Conde’ Nast (publisher of Details Magazine).

WAKE UP PEOPLE! CONDE’ NAST IS IN BUSINESS OF SELLING STORIES, AND THE CHURCH IS ONE IN WHICH PEOPLE ARE LISTENING. GET TO WORK AND GET YOUR HANDS DIRTY IN GOD’S BUSINESS, THE CHURCH.

What we are reading here people is that The Church Has Influence. The church is intriguing enough for Details Magazine to cover Reality LA and run a tag line on the front cover of their magazine (The Hottest Pickup Spot in Hollywood is…Church). The church attracts “beautiful people” who are wanting to know this God they heard about as a kid but stopped believing because it was lifeless. The church is a driving force garnering attention from the largest media outlets. The church has more than enough influence and power to change the course of a nation.

I salute Pastor Tim Chaddick for continuing his relentless pursuit of communicating God’s power and gospel. Of course now many people I am certain are jumping on the Tim Chaddick bandwagon. Pray and believe for greater things for Tim. A friend of mine who started a great shoe company in Los Angeles uses this tag line for his brand and I can’t help not to use it. Javier, thanks in advance for a brilliant mind. He says it like this, “True stars keep on shining.” I believe this for Reality LA and the many other incredible houses of worship in Los Angeles.

Here are my recommendations for places to collide into God in Los Angeles. As many of you may or may not know, I spent 5 years in Los Angeles and began my collision with Christ at the Dream Center in Los Angeles.

Last night my brain got the better of me. I completely confess to my utter foolishness concerning Bill Hybels. As many of you may know, my mouth and brain run (bolt) fast. Not only do these gifts work fast but are equally blunt. While these characteristics can be extremely advantageous (which they are), they can also be disastrous (which they also are).

Our mouths #### us up. They do! The person contrary to this statement should go stand in line for the first space ship to Mars because there are others there who agree with you. Let’s get to the point, we say things we shouldn’t but rarely ever correct these statements now flying into humanity.

This leads me to status updates, tweets and blog posts which are blasted into internetland every single day. Many of these are untrue statements of others, negative statements about others, dishonoring opinions about others, derogatory, malicious and antagonizing words about others.

We tell ourselves we are just letting off steam or de-stressing. We tell ourselves it is our way to unwind or is a gift we have. We tell ourselves someone has to say it, someone has to recognize it. We tell ourselves how right we are and how wrong others are. What the #### are we telling ourselves?

I made an extremely sarcastic statement to Bill Hybels of Willow Creek organization last night (Follow Bill here). Recently I checked out his twitter and noticed that this lenged, this incredible church leader, this incredible global mogul, this remarkable piece of humanity was only following 2 people! 2 People, I remarked to myself on my sofa. How can this global mogul follow only 2 people? There is no one on the planet so awesome to only follow 2 people.

I was aggravated and like most Americans I decided to say what no one else would. As if my words were going to change something, as if my words even needed to change something, as if my words and attitude should warrant a change. Why didn’t I decide to mind my own ###### business? Why didn’t I listen to my wife (Follow my wife and her words of wisdom here).

Most of you online have said something to someone or retorted to another with not only wrong words but wrong feelings behind the words. I’ll bring it home like this. We live a majority of our lives online and yet we do not resolve as much online as we should. We move on and think it doesn’t matter.

I’m here to remind you there is a God who measures words and attitude. Measure your #### before you blast on someone. For me, I knew I needed to resolve this statement. I know Bill Hybels could care less or anyone else from Willow Creek organization. They are used to people bashing them. What I do know they care about is people making restitution. I do know they care about the sin and the sinner. I do know they are working their ### off at bringing the lost into God’s Kingdom.

Confront and handle your #### you have been saying online. Just because you don’t think you have caused a rift doesn’t mean you haven’t. Psalms says those with clean hands and a pure heart will ascend the hill of the Lord. It’s kinda hard to clean up your heart when you avoid it.

Below is my formal apology to Bill Hybels concerning my tweet to him. I am not sure he will ever see it but it’s not really for him, it is for my ignorant ### self. Forgive me Bill and more importantly God.

A few weeks back I noticed an announcement at church about baptism. Let’s be honest, 90% of the church announcements displayed I am on my phone either checking twitter or my Espn app. Don’t ask why, you do the same thing.

We all know church news and announcements are transitional fillers. No one could possibly remember a church news announcements when they only watch it 1x every 7 days. Why do we remember Budweiser ads? Simple, they are replayed religiously every single day, during every single show men watch.

On this particular Sunday a baptism announcement caught my attention. I thought long and hard and remembered that I really hadn’t been baptized since I “believed”. Well, I kinda had but I was like 7 years old and I didn’t think I really knew what the heck baptism was. I think I was more excited there was going to be a pool inside church and thought it would be pretty cool to go “swimming” aka baptized during church.

I am also the preachers son at the church I attend and squirmed at the idea of going in front of everyone and getting dunked during a church service. I am a very low key, don’t try and notice me kinda person and having my face on the jumbo tron at church is the last thing I imagine concerning baptism.

Before I forget. I nearly was baptized in the Jordan River in 2008 by Benny Hinn but decided against it for a few reasons. First, I couldn’t go through with wearing these Abu Dhabi white robes they give you.

Plus, I personally watched 2,000 adults stand in a ridiculously long line in the hot sun. This was not a baptism. This was a new ride at Six Flags. This was more like cattle aimlessly walking to their deaths. I was hoping for the white dove to rest on my shoulder but I was most certain all the doves in the area were flying for freedom.

So, needless to say, as much as I would have liked to say Benny Hinn baptized me, He did not. I did assist many of these Holy Land seekers to dry towels, cameras and help up the stone steps back to reality. Don’t get me wrong, I would have loved for Benny Hinn to dunk me in the Jordan River but like I said before, too much hype and you can find me exit stage left.

Today was my day. I had decided a few days ago to ask my dad to baptize me. My father in law was also going to be with us and it appeared the stars had aligned. The location was perfect, water temperature just right and it was low key. It also didn’t hurt that I had my father and father in law (who are both clergy) to handle the Biblical logistics. The moment was set.

I’ll let the pictures tell the rest of the story. Here are a few scriptures to get you thinking about baptism if you haven’t yet. If you are unsure, seriously read through what the Bible says. There are very few commands that are repeated and are in such close relation to following Christ.

Matthew 3:6
And when they confessed their sins, he baptized them in the Jordan River.

Mark 16:16
Anyone who believes and is baptized will be saved. But anyone who refuses to believe will be condemned

Luke 3:3
Then John went from place to place on both sides of the Jordan River, preaching that people should be baptized to show that they had repented of their sins and turned to God to be forgiven

Acts 2:38
Peter replied, “Each of you must repent of your sins and turn to God, and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. Then you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Acts 2:41
Those who believed what Peter said were baptized and added to the church that day—about 3,000 in all.

Acts 8:12
But now the people believed Philip’s message of Good News concerning the Kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ. As a result, many men and women were baptized.

Acts 9:18
Instantly something like scales fell from Saul’s eyes, and he regained his sight. Then he got up and was baptized.

Acts 10:48
So he gave orders for them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Afterward Cornelius asked him to stay with them for several days.

Acts 16:33
Even at that hour of the night, the jailer cared for them and washed their wounds. Then he and everyone in his household were immediately baptized.

Acts 18:8
Crispus, the leader of the synagogue, and everyone in his household believed in the Lord. Many others in Corinth also heard Paul, became believers, and were baptized.

Acts 22:16
What are you waiting for? Get up and be baptized. Have your sins washed away by calling on the name of the Lord.’

I was riding in an elevator yesterday with my wife and little man Roscoe when at the last minute a young asian girl jumped in. The past few days I have been picking up bits of the Japanese language as we have been on holiday in Hawaii. So, when this 9 year old girl stepped into the elevator, I thought it must be my moment to practice this new language.

My head was flushed with all kinds of ideas of how much of an idiot I will sound if I don’t say the word right. If you are not aware, Japanese is one of the most difficult languages in the world to learn, along with Cantonese/Mandarin. I am sure there are a few others that are equally challenging but these I have found challenging from first hand accounts in China and Japan.

After realizing I probably won’t get the Japanese intonations correct, my mind echoed thoughts of how weird for you to talk to a 9 year old. Instantly I have a picture of some dirt bag named Chester “the molestor” with a mustache who solicits young Asian girls. In the matter of a second, my mind has flashed 2 viable excuses of why I should not make conversation. If I let my mind continue I am most certain I can create a few more.

Instead, I jumped out, nodded my head and said “hai“. Immediately after nodding and speaking, I quickly wondered if I had misjudged this young girl to be Japanese when maybe she is Chinese? I caught myself in slow motion and thought, “no way, she has to be Japanese, we are in Hawaii but then I was like. I am a stupid American how could I really know?”

After nodding and saying “hai“, I noticed the young girl grin and nod in return. It was a success! I had actually said something in Japanese and even this small nod was a victory in my book. Who cares if my intonation was wretched, who cares if it was a 9 year old girl that I said hi to because I was too scared to take on an adult. Who cares, who cares, who cares, who cares and for the last time WHO CARES! (I found out later that “hi” I think means yes and not hello. So I actually nodded and said yes to this girl … but who really cares)

The point is, I defied my comfort zone and jumped out there. Quit living in your world on your terms in your zip code, language, food, stories and get into a new one. It may feel weird and odd and you will probably mess up. You will look like a fool and maybe you need to laugh at yourself a little bit. You will feel like a moron and will get a great injection of humility. Get all you can get, and get more of it. Get addicted to humility.

God has created man in His image and breathed life into them. How could we walk by someone who God has created and let them wash away? You could be their point of contact, a seed, hope, light, salt, joy. Maybe start with just a “hai“.

QUESTIONS:
I would love to know how you spend your time in prayer? Do you pray in the morning, afternoon, evening and why? How many of you would consider yourself “filled with the spirit”?

You’re a guy and on this particular day, you are feeling real sexy. What happens next ruptures all your flyness because you have just walked into church. You are now gazing at people clapping their hands and a few of them even RAISE THEIR HANDS. The drums are kickin, the guitars are blastin’ and there are a few cute singers up front too which makes it all the more confusing? Concert or church? Do I throw my sexiness back on or leave it in the car?

You are at church but you feel like you’re at a concert. You are at church but it feels exciting? You are at church but you see loads of people who look really cool. You do a quick panorama to see who has been engaging in some pre-partying prior to church. They must have a beer garden at least to pump this crowd up. How – do – they – do – it?

I went off the other day on a bunch of dudes. They somehow thought they were awesome because they sit in the back and have their arms folded the entire time during worship. Our worship segment at church consists of 4 – 5 songs which simply remind us of how amazing our God is, who He is and how we are idiots because we don’t worship enough. Anyway, these guys are fully devoted in non-participation during worship but fully committed to writing down 5 pages of notes that they will never look at again.

If you’re a guy there is a 90% chance that you are too scared of people around you to actively worship in any of these manners. I’ll bust some B-I-B-L-E on yah. Chances are you probably still won’t care because you are too caught up in the “I am Awesome Zone.” Let me know how that is working since you’re by yourself.

Before you go through the following passages, let me clarify all of this worship stuff. Here we go. You cannot worship a God that you don’t know. If you don’t have a revelation of who God is, you will continue to imagine that it is just not for you. Until you read what it says in John 4:23. Soak your socks on some of that and maybe you’ll find your “Sexy_ness”.

Psalm 63:4 Thus will I bless you while I live;I will lift up my hands in your name.
In Psalm 141:2 David describes a similar act of worship: Let my prayer be set forth before you as incense,The lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice.

In Psalm 143:6 David describes a different position of his hands which expresses his longing for God:I spread out my hands to You;My soul longs for you like a thirsty land.
Lifting up our hands is an act by which we acknowledge God’s majesty. Spreading out our hands indicates our desire to receive from God.

Another way in which we may use our hands in worship is described in Psalm 47:1 – 2: Oh, clap your hands, all you peoples! Shout to God with the voice of triumph! For the Lord Most High is awesome; He is a great King over all the earth.

By clapping our hands in this way we acknowledge the awesome majesty of our great King. By joining this with a shout of triumph, we proclaim His total victory. From time to time I have been present in a meeting when something that was said or done provoked a burst of clapping and sometimes also of shouting. Probably some who responded in this way did not realise that it was a scriptural act of worship.

Shouting – let me add – does not mean loud singing. It means shouting – like when Devon Hester takes a kickoff 103 yards TO – THE – HOUSE. Like that.

When Solomon was dedicating the temple that he had built to the Lord, he spread out his hands. But he also went further: he knelt down on his knees (2 Chronicles 6:12 – 13). This form of worship typifies total submission to the Lord.

In Ephesians 3:15 Paul reveals that he too approached God in this position: “I bow my knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Ultimately the whole universe will make this act of submission to the Creator. In Isaiah 45:23 the Lord declares: “I have sworn by myself . . . that to Me every knee shall bow . . .” In Philippians 2:10 Paul reveals that this act of submission will be made specifically to Jesus, as God’s appointed ruler: “at the name of Jesus every knee should bow . . .”

There is a further act of worship which includes the whole body and which is depicted in the Bible more often than any other: to prostrate one’s self before God. When we prostrate ourselves in this way, we acknowledge our total dependence on God. We thus revoke the desire to be independent of God which prompted the original disobedience of Adam and Eve and which characterises the fallen nature of every one of their descendants.
At some time or other most of the great men in the Bible had found themselves flat on their faces before God. Twice in Genesis 17 it records that Abraham fell on his face before the Lord (verses 3, 17).

When the Lord appeared to Joshua outside Jericho as the commander of God’s army, [Joshua] fell on his face to the earth. He was further commanded to take off his sandals from his feet (Joshua 5:13 – 15). Both actions – falling on his face and taking off his sandals – expressed worship. It was in this posture of worship that Joshua received the Lord’s direction for taking Jericho.

By contemporary standards, however, the most unconventional act of worship is described in 2 Samuel 6:12 – 14. When David had successfully brought the ark up to Jerusalem, he danced before the Lord with all his might. Since David was a mighty man of valour, the phrase “all his might” must indicate extremely energetic actions that included every part of his body. This was the most appropriate expression of his exuberant joy and gratitude to God.

Of course I took this quote totally out of context because it is my blog and I can do whatever I want. He was actually talking about his basketball skills which had been in full effect earlier in the day as he put on a clinic for some blind children in nearby Indiana. (I’m layin it on thick, so I hope you are catchin it) Stick with me and I’ll give you a mug shot of Carl Lentz’s personal notes ….

It just may happen.

What kind of poison has dripped into your perspective and tainted your view of Jesus? Maybe your view of the Bible has been poisoned? All it takes is one drop.

Your perspective is so fragile and time so limited. I have so many stupid movie lines buzzing in my brain right now that I have to cough a few up. “You must choose, but choose wisely,” “You only get one shot,” “I’m your huckleberry.”

And of course right when I attempt to draw out all of these movie quotes my brain decides to think about something else. Apologies in advance, hope you enjoy the notes.

Rick Renner once again illuminated session 4 of Connect 2010 with infinite personal life details. It seemed like I was listening to a fictional character from Harry Potter. But no, Rick went on to disclose information concerning his work history at a cemetary, his gramma Faulkner (no relation to the Fockers) and aunt Velma.

Nobody could make up characters with names like these. Then he tops it off by telling us how a certain family member was rumored to have knocked off one of their spouses. No, this is not a Soprano’s episode.

It couldn’t be with names like Velma and Faulkner … this was something different. This was none other than a-la-Rick-Renner!

If you didn’t get a chance to be at the conference or watch via our live stream. I highly suggest you hunt down this MP3 file. Rick absolutely ripped up Romans 6 and being dead to sin. I can’t articulate anywhere near his sniper_esque vocabulary so instead, here is a handwritten note from the pen of Rick Renner and Robb Thompson.

If you would like to contact them or drop them a note in return, you can find Rick Renner on Facebook and Robb Thompson on Facebook or Twitter.
