The Re Education of Society

Jack Kevorkian, Time Magazine

I can remember as a young kid first hearing about this psychotic doctor named Jack Kevorkian. We only lived a few hours from Michigan but I still recall the word euthanasia in my tiny 8 year old brain. Of course at that time in my life I thought this was either a new country in Asia or some sort of Chinese dish at Mo’s Noodle Shop.

HBO pulled together an incredible collection of footage concerning Dr. Jack Kevorkian and produced You Don’t Know Jack, starring Al Pacino and Susan Sarandon. If you have HBO and are curious as I am concerning this eccentric doctor, scope this film out. If you are unfamiliar with Dr. Jack Kevorkian for the sake of time, click here and brief yourself. For those of you who just stare at Borders bookshelves and have no idea where to start or what to read, then take a look at this list. I have included a very diverse list of books from tastemaker essentials to new Jesus strategies. Whatever your flavor may be we have listed something for you.

The greatest gift is a passion for reading. It is cheap, it consoles, it distracts, it excites, it gives you knowledge of the world and experience of a wide kind. It is a moral illumination. – Elizabeth Hardwick

Think about what you have going on around you right this second. Do you have music playing in iTunes or an iPod earbud in your ear? Did you just receive a buzz from a text message or hear fellow employees chatter around you? Did you just hear a shutting door or a turning handle? Do you even notice?

Do you have your favorite TV show playing in the background while you read? Is your room mate marching around your apartment opening and shutting drawers? Can you hear the hum of cars passing by your home or apartment? Horns honking, police sirens, airplanes, dripping water, your heater or a/c unit kick on, a dog barking/chewing, child crying, mobile phone clicking or ringing?

You want a San Pelligrino? These orange ones are pretty good… or the lemon for that matter. I said to a buddy of mine as we stepped inside a local southside coffee shop, “I know you don’t like coffee but since I am gonna drink something, you need to have something too.” No one likes to drink by themselves, non-alcoholic or not. What my buddy said after this statement is something that most of us would drive right by. We get so close to someone but (then) somehow our brain forgets about them and shifts back to me, myself and I.

Last night, seated in the back of a black SUV and driving home from the 2010 Chicago Auto Show, I looked in amazement at a message posted on Facebook. It seems these days I resort to news via social media than anywhere else. Either way, I was a bit disappointed with my hacked iPhone and its lethargic 2g internet speeds.  I was squeezing, shaking and speaking poetic words to my phone in an attempt to load an La Times blog.  I noticed after searching Safari the story had been updated within the hour, THIS was a hot one.  Plus I knew there had to be some validity to it if the Los Angeles Times had scooped the story up.  I had a feeling this sort of news was going to happen but for some reason I didn’t want to admit I first heard it on Facebook.

How many of us can shut off…literally?  Turn off our mobile phones, computers, twitterland, televisions and ipods and listen to the empty hallways of our brain. What sort of activity is happening inside these hallways that we miss? What is really going on in our brain? Have we become overly occupied, chasing tweets and status updates? I recently came across an incredible blog – which many of you may know of – but rolled into my lap like the most perfect, virtual fortune cookie.  Read the rest of this entry »

I now understand a very simple concept – that is simple, but brings life an insane amount of color. When someone says they Hate Church, is this another method of dodging?  We laugh at guys like Aziz Ansari and cry at movies like Dear John. We dance to beats made by Kanye, in clothes crafted by colorful people like Alexander Wang. Our daily food life consists of recipes bombarded upon us by food creatures like Giada or rebels such as Bourdain. Why do they do what they do, and why are we stuck watching?  Read the rest of this entry »

I think a great question – posed to me the other day – was when someone asked me “what is grassroots?” They were referring to our GesuCristo T-shirt push, concerning my friends orphanage in St. Marc, Haiti. I paused for a second trying to sort out the best way to answer the question when I finally said, “it’s a small group of people moving toward a goal.”  Our goal is $6,000 USD, we are currently at $1,200. Many of us including myself always find myself confused when trying to support disaster relief. Unicef, Red Cross, United Nations fund etc and what exactly are they doing. We all see them on the news but somehow there is a disconnect between dollar and worker. How do I know which one to support? If you prefer a more grassroots approach then please carry on reading.

[This is a continuation of my previous post concerning the documentary produced by Levi's titled "Go Forth"]

Inasmuch as we strive to do something special with each breathe we take, this desire seemingly vaporizes before we know what happened.  The desires buried in our cold, confused hearts sneak up periodically, in an attempt to taste this enigma called, reality.  As it crawls out of its hole inch by inch, it is again mercilessly bashed by this world it craves.  The life and oxygen it must have is –  ironically – beating the living (expletive) out of it.  Your life sucks or is not what it’s cracked up to be… now what?  Read the rest of this entry »
